Signposting Words
Signposting words, also known as transition words or phrases, are words that act as a “roadmap” for your reader.
Just like road signs guide a driver, these words guide your audience through your writing or speech, making it easier to follow your argument and understand the connections between your ideas.
The purpose of using signposting words is to:
Improve Clarity and Cohesion, creating a smooth flow between sentences and paragraphs, preventing your writing from sounding like a series of unrelated points.
Signal Structure, telling the reader what to expect next. For example, a word like “firstly” signals the beginning of a list, while “in conclusion” tells the reader a summary is coming.
Show Relationships Between Ideas:
They clarify the logical links between different points.
This includes showing when you are:
Adding an idea: “Furthermore,” “in addition” Giving an example: “For instance,” “to illustrate”
Contrasting a point: “However,” “on the other hand” Showing cause and effect: “Therefore,” “as a result”
Summarising: “In summary,” “to conclude”
By using signposting words effectively, you help your reader understand the direction of your work, the connections you are making, and the overall structure of your argument.
This is a crucial skill for academic writing.

Academic writing needs sources, shown by your citations within it, otherwise it is just writing.
