Manage your time

This may be the first time you’ve had to be responsible for your own schedule.

You can use the material on the Getting Organised pages.

  • Use a digital or paper calendar (or both), add in all your lecture, assignment hand in dates etc.
  • Use a day & week planner.
  • Put planners where you will see them.
  • Develop a system to organise your notes and other paperwork.Plan for roughly two hours of independent study for every one hour spent in class.
  • Categorize tasks by urgency and importance to avoid spending time on low-value activities.
  • Treat university like a 9-to-5 job to keep evenings free for societies, social activities, and rest without feeling guilty

Planners to download

Overcommitting in Freshers’ Week: Join societies, but limit commitments in your first term while adjusting to the workload.

Underestimating prep time: University seminars require reading and preparation beforehand, not just afterwards.

Studying in bed: Keep work and sleep spaces separate to maintain focus while studying and preserve sleep quality.
